Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to travel to Senegal and The Gambia?

Yes. Both countries are politically stable and welcome thousands of international travelers each year. We work with vetted local guides and drivers from Torch Light Tours throughout the trip, and our itinerary sticks to well-traveled routes for tourism.

Is the lion walk actually safe? What if I'm nervous about it?

The lion encounter is run by trained handlers at a reserve set up specifically for this kind of close, guided interaction — you're never left alone with the animals, and handlers brief you beforehand on exactly what to expect. If you'd rather observe from a distance instead of walking closer, that's completely fine — there's no obligation to do more than you're comfortable with.

How physically demanding is this trip?

This trip is designed for moderate activity, not an athletic challenge. Most days involve walking on uneven ground, some time in vehicles, and a few longer stretches on your feet (like the lion walk or exploring Gorée Island). If you can comfortably walk for 15 minutes at a time and manage some light steps or uneven paths, you'll be fine. Let us know about any mobility concerns beforehand and we'll help you plan around them.

What should I pack?

Lightweight, breathable clothing, closed-toe walking shoes, a hat and sunscreen, a light rain layer, and a reusable water bottle are the essentials. We'll send a full packing list once you register, tailored to the season and specific stops on this itinerary.

I'm traveling solo — is that a problem?

Not at all — many of our travelers join solo. Group trips like this one are actually one of the easiest ways to travel alone and never feel alone, since you're with the group from arrival to departure. A single supplement applies for solo travelers who prefer their own room; let us know if you'd rather be paired with a roommate.

What's the deposit and cancellation policy?

A deposit of $250 non-refundable secures your spot, with the balance due by January 7th for the February trip. If your plans change, deposits are partially refundable up to 45 days before departure — full details are in the booking confirmation, and we're happy to talk through specifics on the info session. We also highly recommend Travel Insurance.

Your Ancestors Are Waiting. Come Home.

This is more than a journey; it is a sacred reclamation. It is the healing of a lineage and the closing of a circle that was broken centuries ago. The soil is calling, the history is yours, and the welcome is waiting. Step into the story only you can complete. Your place at the table is reserved, claim it.
